I cast a broad net. So the versatility of journalism seemed a perfect fit when I began my career more than three decades ago. Since then I’ve chalked up titles as reporter, correspondent, magazine editor, communications professor, study abroad director, media consultant, publicist, author, memoir writer/editor, social media strategist, writing coach, and documentary writer/producer.
During my media career, I worked for national and international publications, including Women’s Wear Daily, W, Money, D Magazine, American Way, the Dallas Morning News, Texas Business, and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. I helped start up two Dallas-area publications where I served as editor. I have been recognized by Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and by the Dallas Press Association for excellence in feature writing. I received the Junior League of Dallas Community Service Award for investigative reporting.
In my academic career, I spent 18 years as an award-winning Communication Studies professor at Southern Methodist University, where I was also director of the SMU-in-London program. In addition to teaching international and non-profit communications abroad and in Taos, N.M., I led off-campus programs, including a journey to the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of the BP oil spill.
In 1990, I formed Nina Flournoy Editorial Services (NFES), but put my company on the back burner to take jobs as magazine editor, university professor, study abroad director, book author, and PR consultant. Also during that time, I took on the role of mother of three girls and community volunteer.
In 2015, I returned my focus to NFES when I was commissioned to write and publish “The Lions Among Us: Celebrating 80 Years of The Dallas Petroleum Club.” The book tells the story of the risk-taking oil tycoons who sparked the East Texas oil boom of the 1930s, and how they formed an oil fraternity in Dallas that helped build the city while impacting the nation and the global oil business.
The following year, I edited, designed, and published oilman Al Hrubetz’s book, “A Geophysicist’s Memoir: Searching for Oil on Six Continents.” In 2018, I edited, designed, and published Bill Peavy’s book, “Originally From Shreveport: A Lite Off-the-Wall Memoir.” In 2019, I wrote, designed, and published the biography of entrepreneur and philanthropist Howard Schultz entitled “Schultz’s Ledger: Parlaying Errors into Success on the Path to the American Dream.” In 2023, I edited, designed, and published a novel by lawyer and author Scotty Comegys, “Cassie’s Comet.” Later that year, I edited “Flew Too High,” a memoir by Louis Mandrapilias. Published in 2024, it tracks his experience as a gay drug smuggler in the heyday of Studio 54. In 2025, I edited, designed, and published David N. Powers’ memoir, “Power Lines: My American Story.”
NFES Publishing : A One-Stop Shop … Books have been published under the label: NFES Publishing. In addition to writing and editing services, NFES oversees the content, layout, text format, inside art, and cover design. We see the manuscript through from concept to publication. Services include managing book distribution through major book retailers, creating a website landing page for the book/author, writing press materials, organizing book signings, and promoting books/authors through mainstream and social media.
A member of the National Association of Independent Writers & Editors (NAIWE), my current client list includes authors, corporations, non-profit organizations, real estate and financial firms for whom I have served as publicist, social media and blog writer/editor, writing coach, ghostwriter, and documentary scriptwriter/producer. My latest passion is deep-diving into my family history. I’ve published a series of articles about this adventure in Country Roads Magazine. (Click on the Portfolio tab at the top of this page.)
My husband, Dr. Craig Flournoy, and I live in Dallas. Both Louisiana natives who adopted Texas, we have three daughters: Helene, Louise, and Emma, a son-in-law, Michael Sula, and two dogs.
I earned an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing and Journalism from Louisiana State University and a Master of Liberal Studies degree at SMU.
